Generations and engines
Premios in Kenya are mostly Japanese imports across two main generations. Engines are typically petrol units from around 1.5 to 2.0 litres. Some older 2.0 models use Toyota’s D4 direct-injection engine, while many later Premios pair their engines with a CVT gearbox. We confirm your model’s engine and gearbox before choosing oil, fluid and parts.
Common service requirements
- Engine oil and filter at the correct interval and grade
- Air and cabin filters, with more frequent air-filter changes on dusty roads
- Spark plugs at the scheduled mileage
- Automatic or CVT gearbox fluid, with the correct Toyota fluid
- Coolant, brake fluid and drive-belt checks
- Suspension and steering checks at each service
Issues owners commonly report
- Rough running or hesitation on D4 engines, which can be linked to fuel quality, injectors or carbon build-up
- Suspension noises from worn anti-roll bar links, bushes or shock absorbers
- Idle and throttle-body issues causing unstable idle
- Brake wear, typical for a heavier saloon in traffic
- Oil consumption on some older, high-mileage engines
These vary with age, mileage and service history.
Diagnostics
If your Premio has a warning light, poor running or a gearbox concern, we read fault codes and live data, check fluids, and test the likely components — including fuel and ignition on D4 models — before recommending any repair.
Keeping your Premio healthy
- Keep to the service schedule and use the right oil and gearbox fluid.
- Refuel at reputable stations — especially important for D4 engines.
- Have rough running or warning lights checked early.
- Ask for a health check if you have just bought the car and the history is unclear.
