Engines and drivetrain
Prados in Kenya are mostly diesel — common engines include the 3.0 (1KD) on older models and the 2.8 (1GD) on newer ones — with some petrol versions. They have full-time four-wheel drive with a transfer case, and many use automatic gearboxes. Some newer diesels have a diesel particulate filter (DPF).
Common service requirements
- Engine oil and filter at the correct interval and grade for your engine
- Diesel fuel filter on schedule, and water-separator draining where fitted
- Air filter — more often with dusty or off-road driving — and cabin filter
- Transfer case and front and rear differential oils
- Automatic gearbox fluid checks per the schedule
- Coolant, brake fluid and drive-belt checks
- Suspension, steering and underbody inspection, especially after off-road use
Issues owners commonly report
- Injector-related issues on older diesels, such as rough running, smoke or hard starting
- DPF warnings on newer diesels used mainly for short trips
- Suspension and steering wear from the vehicle’s weight and rough roads
- Brake wear and vibration, typical for a heavy 4x4
- Oil leaks on high-mileage engines and drivetrains
These vary with age, mileage, fuel quality and how hard the vehicle is used.
Diagnostics
We read fault codes from the engine, gearbox, 4WD and ABS systems, review live data such as injector corrections and, on DPF models, soot loading and regeneration history. Suspension, steering and underbody are inspected with the vehicle raised.
Keeping your Prado healthy
- Change the fuel filter on time and refuel at reputable stations.
- Service the 4x4 fluids, not just the engine oil.
- Give newer diesels regular longer drives so the DPF can regenerate.
- Book a health check before long trips or safaris.
