Engines and what they need
Most CX-5s on Kenyan roads use Mazda’s SkyActiv-G petrol engines or the SkyActiv-D 2.2 diesel. Many are fitted with an automatic gearbox, and some are all-wheel drive.
- Petrol models are generally straightforward to maintain. Regular oil and filter changes with the correct specification, air-filter changes (more often on dusty roads) and spark plugs at the scheduled interval are the core of their care.
- Diesel models need more attention to how they are used. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) needs regular longer drives at steady speed to clean itself. Frequent short trips can prevent this, leading to warning lights, reduced power and, in some cases, a rising oil level.
Common service requirements
- Engine oil and filter at the interval for your engine, using Mazda’s specification
- Air and cabin filters — more often if the vehicle is used on dusty roads
- Spark plugs (petrol) and fuel filter checks (diesel) at the scheduled mileage
- Brake fluid and coolant at the recommended intervals
- Automatic gearbox and, on AWD versions, transfer-case and rear-differential fluid checks per the schedule
- A start-stop compatible battery on vehicles with i-stop
Issues owners commonly report
- DPF-related warnings on diesels used mainly for short trips
- Oil dilution on diesels, shown as a rising oil level
- i-stop not working, often linked to battery condition or battery type
- Brake wear and brake noise, typical for a heavy SUV used in traffic
- Suspension knocks from worn anti-roll bar links or bushes as the vehicle ages
Not every CX-5 will have these issues; they depend on engine, year, mileage and how the car is driven.
Diagnostics
Warning lights on a CX-5 should be read with a scan tool rather than guessed at. On diesels we check DPF status and soot loading, regeneration history, and oil condition. On all models we check battery health and the charging system before blaming i-stop or electrical faults.
Keeping your CX-5 healthy
- Stick to the service schedule and keep a record of it — your service history with us builds automatically.
- For diesels, include a regular longer drive at steady speed if most of your driving is short trips.
- Have warning lights checked early, especially engine or DPF lights.
- Book a vehicle health check before long journeys.
