What To Do If You Lose Your Car Keys

Lost your car keys in Nairobi? A step-by-step guide — searching smart, securing your car, the information you'll need and how replacement works.

Losing your car keys is stressful, especially if it’s your only key. Take a breath — here’s a practical plan.

1. Retrace your steps

Check pockets, bags and the last places you were. Call any shops, offices or venues you visited. Check around the car itself — keys are often dropped when getting out.

2. Use your spare (if you have one)

If there’s a spare at home, use it to get moving — then get another spare made straight away. Replacing a key while you still have a working one is usually simpler than when all keys are lost. See spare car keys.

3. Secure the vehicle

If you think the keys may have been stolen along with something showing your address or vehicle details, keep the car somewhere secure and consider reporting the loss to the police. When a replacement key is programmed, lost keys can often be removed from the car’s memory so they no longer start it.

4. Gather the information you’ll need

Before contacting a key specialist, have ready:

  • Make, model and year of the vehicle
  • Registration number
  • Key type — standard key, remote key, smart key or keyless entry (if you’re unsure, say so)
  • Where the vehicle is right now
  • Proof of ownership — for security, you’ll be asked to show that the vehicle is yours

5. Ask about replacement

Most modern keys need to be supplied or cut and programmed to the vehicle. The exact process depends on your car. Our car key replacement page explains the service, and the key request form lets you send all the details — including a photo, if you have one of the key or the ignition.

6. Don’t forget the rest of the keyring

If house or office keys were on the same ring, arrange for locks to be secured too.

Preventing it next time

  • Keep a spare key somewhere safe and known to one trusted person
  • Replace worn key cases and remote batteries before they fail
  • Avoid leaving keys on display in public places
