Signs Your Car Needs Computer Diagnostics

Warning lights, rough running, poor fuel economy and gearbox problems — when a diagnostic scan is the right next step, and what it can (and can't) tell you.

Modern vehicles contain several computers — for the engine, gearbox, brakes, airbags and more. When one detects a problem, it stores a fault code. A diagnostic scan reads those codes and live data so a technician can find the cause.

1. The check engine light is on

This is the most common reason. A steady light means the engine computer has detected a fault that should be checked soon. A flashing light often means a serious misfire — reduce speed and have the car checked as soon as possible, as continuing to drive can damage the catalytic converter.

2. Other warning lights

ABS, airbag, traction control, gearbox and battery warnings all point to faults stored in the relevant control unit. The airbag light in particular should never be ignored — it can mean the airbags may not deploy.

3. Rough running or loss of power

Misfires, hesitation, rough idling or a car that suddenly feels weak — sometimes with the engine entering a reduced-power “limp mode” — usually leave fault codes behind.

4. Worse fuel economy

A faulty sensor can make the engine run too rich, burning more fuel. You may notice it before any warning light appears.

5. Gearbox problems

Harsh or delayed shifts, or the gearbox staying in one gear, can be caused by electronic faults the transmission computer records.

6. Intermittent electrical faults

Problems that come and go are hard to reproduce. Stored codes and live data help pin them down. See auto electrical repair.

What diagnostics can — and can’t — tell you

A fault code tells you which system or circuit has a problem, not always which part has failed. For example, a code for a lean mixture could be caused by a vacuum leak, a fuel-supply issue or a faulty sensor. That’s why good diagnostics combines the scan with live data and physical testing by a technician — so you replace the right part the first time.

Clearing codes isn’t a fix

Clearing a code switches the light off, but if the fault remains, the light comes back — and some faults get worse with time.
